Fire in the Hole 3 Slot Game Review

Fire in the Hole 3 sends Nolimit City’s hard-drinking dwarf into a frozen mine where every explosion can open another part of the reels. The game begins with only three active rows, but winning combinations and special features gradually break through the ice until all six rows are available.

Released in June 2025, Fire in the Hole 3 is played across six reels and can offer up to 46,656 ways to win when the entire mine is open. The familiar xBomb and xSplit mechanics return alongside xHole symbols, buried features, Wild Mining and an expanded version of Lucky Wagon Spins. The maximum win has also increased to 70,000x the total bet.

Fire in the Hole 3 is available alongside the wider collection of online slots at Smooth Spins.

Theme & Graphics

The original mine is almost unrecognisable beneath the ice. Frozen blocks fill the lower reels, blue crystals glow inside the rock and snow covers much of the machinery. The dwarf is still here, although the whiskey bottles scattered around the screen suggest he has not spent the time waiting patiently.

The paying symbols include whiskey bottles, wheelbarrows filled with gold, spiked boots, lanterns and cooked birds. Standard A, K, Q, J and 10 symbols make up the lower-paying group.

What caught our attention was how often the screen changes during one round. The mine starts with three rows, but collapses push the active area further down. Ice cracks, hidden features appear and the playing area can eventually double in height. Even a modest combination can feel like the beginning of something larger when another part of the mine opens underneath it.

Matching symbols pay across adjacent reels from left to right. The xBomb Wild can substitute for regular paying symbols, but not the Wagon Coin Bonus symbols used to trigger Lucky Wagon Spins.

Bonus Features

Collapsing Mine

Every spin begins with three active rows.

When a winning combination lands, the paying symbols disappear and the remaining symbols fall into the empty spaces. Another row also becomes active beneath the grid, allowing fresh symbols to enter as the mine moves downwards.

Collapses can also be triggered by an xBomb explosion, Wild Mining or an xHole symbol. The playing area continues expanding until all six rows are available.

We liked how clearly this gives each collapse a purpose. The game is not only replacing the symbols that were removed. It is also moving towards a larger grid with more ways to form a win.

xBomb Wild Multiplier

The xBomb symbol acts as a Wild and explodes before the next collapse.

Its explosion removes the symbols sitting beside it, apart from Wagon Coin Bonus symbols, and increases the active win multiplier for the following drop. The cleared spaces are then filled as another collapse begins.

An xBomb does not always need to be part of the winning combination. When it is active on the screen, it can still explode and continue the sequence.

Wild Mining

Wild Mining can trigger when three to six matching symbols form a straight horizontal or vertical line without creating an ordinary win.

The matching symbols are removed and Wilds appear in the centre of the formation:

  • Three matching symbols create one Wild.
  • Four matching symbols create two Wilds.
  • Five matching symbols create three Wilds.
  • Six matching symbols create four Wilds.

The symbols above the mining bar are then cleared, apart from Bonus symbols and buried ice blocks. Another collapse follows, and any buried feature exposed by the movement becomes active.

Buried Features

Some positions contain features trapped beneath the ice.

These may reveal:

  • A Wild
  • An xSplit symbol
  • A win multiplier between 2x and 100x
  • An xHole symbol
  • A Wagon Coin Bonus symbol
  • The Max symbol

The ice normally needs to be reached by an xBomb explosion before the feature inside becomes active. xSplit can also expose certain buried symbols when it affects the same position.

Having several possibilities hidden inside the ice gives us another reason to watch the lower half of the screen. Sometimes the next important feature is already visible, but still needs the right explosion to release it.

xSplit

An xSplit symbol divides the other symbols on its reel, doubling their size or value within the combination.

Bonus, xHole and other xSplit symbols cannot be divided. Once the splitting process finishes, the xSplit symbols transform into one of the regular paying icons.

The feature can also break selected ice blocks when the resulting movement creates another collapse.

xHole

An xHole pulls the regular paying symbols away from the reels before throwing them back into random positions.

The returned symbols may appear in split sizes ranging from one to three positions. The xHole itself then leaves an empty space, triggering another collapse.

More than one xHole can appear during the same sequence. When that happens, the affected symbols may be split further before returning to the grid.

Lucky Wagon Spins

Three or more Wagon Coin Bonus symbols trigger Lucky Wagon Spins.

The number of symbols controls how much of the feature is open at the start:

  • Three Bonus symbols begin with two active rows.
  • Four Bonus symbols begin with three active rows.
  • Five Bonus symbols begin with four active rows.
  • Six Bonus symbols begin with four active rows and a guaranteed Persistent Dwarf on the first spin.

The feature begins with three spins. Whenever a new Coin lands, the counter returns to three rather than simply adding one extra spin.

Each Coin carries a value based on the total bet. Enhancers appear above the reels and activate when a Coin lands directly beneath them.

Lucky Wagon Enhancers

The Enhancer row can introduce several effects:

Coin Values set or increase the value of the Coin underneath.

Multipliers multiply Coins and selected persistent features on the same reel.

Dynamite adds value to the triggering Coin and throws explosives onto the playing area. These can break ice, double Coin values, activate chests or uncover another hidden feature.

Persistent Dynamite throws more explosives onto the grid after every remaining spin.

Persistent Dwarf collects the Coin values currently visible in its position on each spin.

Evil Dwarf activates a Golden Spin, causing the Coins already on the grid to trigger their Enhancers again.

The number of moving parts can look overwhelming, but most effects happen in a clear order. A Coin lands, the Enhancer above it reacts and any resulting Dynamite or collection effects follow.

Frozen Wagon Spins

An xHole Enhancer triggers three Frozen Wagon Spins and changes into a 1x Coin.

During these spins, the top row contains only Coin Value Enhancers. Every active Coin on the grid collects the value shown above its reel.

Once the three Frozen Wagon Spins finish, the standard Lucky Wagon feature resumes and the remaining-spin counter returns to three.

Fire in the Bowl

A 2x2 Max symbol may be buried inside the ice.

Clearing every layer of ice around it triggers Fire in the Bowl, awarding the maximum win of 70,000x the total bet. Reaching that amount ends the current game round.

Spin Mechanics

Fire in the Hole 3 uses six reels with a changing number of active rows.

Wins begin on the leftmost reel and continue across adjacent reels. When a payout occurs, those symbols are removed, another row opens and fresh symbols fall into place. The grid can expand from three active rows to six, raising the number of available winning combinations to a maximum of 46,656.

The game does not rely on one feature alone. xBombs clear symbols and increase the multiplier, xSplit creates larger icons, xHole rearranges the grid and Wild Mining can continue a round that did not initially produce an ordinary win.

It took us a few collapses to become comfortable with everything happening on screen. Once we stopped trying to follow every ice block at once, the movement became easier to read. The active mine level, current multiplier and exposed special symbols are the parts worth watching most closely.

Nolimit City classifies Fire in the Hole 3 as an extreme-volatility slot. Its larger win potential is concentrated in longer collapse sequences, buried multiplier features and Lucky Wagon Spins rather than regular combinations of a similar size.

  • Duck Hunters is another feature-heavy Nolimit City release. Cascading wins, Bomb symbols, expanding xWays icons and multipliers that develop across the grid give it a similarly chaotic rhythm.
  • Breakout also comes from Nolimit City and builds its gameplay around interacting features. Character multipliers, Chain Reaction Respins and two different bonus rounds should appeal to players who enjoy having several mechanics develop together.
  • Pirots 4 uses an expanding grid where collecting symbols opens new areas and carries progress towards the bonus. Its mechanics are different, but the sense of the playing area gradually developing feels close to the Collapsing Mine.

Smooth Spins’ Opinion

Fire in the Hole 3 gives us something to watch beyond the first winning combination. Every collapse opens another layer of the mine, and the ice blocks make it possible to see some of the features waiting below before they are released.

The Collapsing Mine was the part we enjoyed most. Starting with only three active rows makes reaching the full six-row grid feel like a proper progression rather than the game simply beginning at its largest size.

Lucky Wagon Spins is more complicated. Coins, Enhancers, Dynamite, chests and both dwarfs can all become involved during one feature. We needed a couple of rounds before the order of events felt natural, but the effects are connected well enough that the feature does not feel completely random.

This will suit players who enjoy Nolimit City slots with plenty happening beneath the surface. Anyone after fixed paylines and one straightforward Free Spins feature may find it excessive. Fire in the Hole 3 is noisy, unpredictable and occasionally difficult to follow, but that is also what gives it its identity.
