Ra vs Osiris by Pragmatic Play puts us in ancient Egypt, with Ra and Osiris taking control of two different ways to play. The grid itself doesn't change between them: we still have five reels, five rows and 15 paylines. What does change is the volatility.
Ra gives us the less volatile profile. Bonus Spins have a better chance of appearing here, although their average win is lower. With Osiris, those rounds come around less often but have a higher average win. Beyond that choice, much of the game revolves around Expanding Wilds, their multipliers and what happens to them during Bonus Spins. There are quite a few rules behind the Wilds, despite the fairly straightforward payline setup for an online slot.
Ancient Egypt covers pretty much every part of the screen. We have a pyramid in the distance, but this time it differs depending which profile is chosen. Osiris’ is cursed. Mysterious ghost entities fly around the cursed pyramid emitting a green light, and Ra’s has a red sunset shining light through the whole background.
The symbols are a mixture of Egyptian gods and animals. Jackals, lions, crocodiles, snakes, scarabs and scorpions appear alongside the regular A, K, Q, J and 10 symbols. Ra and Osiris have different designs for their Expanding Wilds too.
The choice between the two profiles is shown beside the reels, so we can see which one we're playing without having to dig through the game information.
The values below are based on the 1x total bet.
The regular Wild can replace any symbol except the Scatter. Expanding Wilds are different. They can land on any reel and expand across it when doing so forms a win, picking up a random multiplier with possible values between 2x and 1,000x. If several are involved in the same winning combination, those multipliers are added together.
We need at least three Scatters to reach Bonus Spins. Three, four or five all give us six spins, but they don't give the Expanding Wilds the same starting point. The minimum multiplier is 2x with three Scatters, 4x with four and 8x with five.
There's a decision to make before playing them. We can take the current minimum multiplier and start the round or gamble it for a higher value. A successful gamble moves us to the next value, and this can continue as far as a 100x minimum. Losing means the Bonus Spins are forfeited.
Expanding Wilds get another job during Bonus Spins, where they also act as Walking Wilds. Once one expands as part of a win, it receives its multiplier and a respin begins.
It keeps that multiplier as it moves one reel to the left after each respin. The sequence ends for that Wild once it has travelled beyond reel one. We can also have several of them on the grid at once, with the respins continuing until all active Walking Wilds have left.
Scatters can add more spins to the round. Landing three, four or five gives us another six Bonus Spins and raises the minimum Expanding Wild multiplier by one, two or three positions on its list of possible values.
That minimum can eventually get as high as 1,000x. Retriggers still award six extra spins after that point, but they can't push the minimum any higher.
Ra vs Osiris plays on a 5x5 grid with 15 paylines. Wins have to start on reel one and continue across adjacent reels from left to right. If more than one payline wins on the same spin, those wins are added together, while only the highest win is counted on each individual line.
Before playing, we also choose between Ra and Osiris. The reels and paylines stay the same whichever profile we pick, but the volatility doesn't. Ra has the better chance of triggering Bonus Spins, with a lower average win from the feature. Osiris makes Bonus Spins less frequent, but their average win is higher.
Wins can reach 25,000x the bet. This limit also applies during Bonus Spins, and if the accumulated feature win reaches 25,000x, the round ends there and any Bonus Spins left aren't played.
Ra vs Osiris gives us a choice that actually changes how we approach the game. Ra makes more sense if we'd prefer a better chance of seeing Bonus Spins, while Osiris trades some of that frequency for a higher average win from the feature.
Most of the detail comes from the Wilds. Their multipliers can reach some large values, and having more than one involved in a combination means those values are added. Once we're in Bonus Spins, the Walking Wild mechanic gives them more time on the grid instead of having everything decided by their original landing position.
There are a few rules to get used to, especially around the minimum multiplier and retriggers. The regular 15-payline game is much simpler. Having two profiles is a nice fit for the Ra versus Osiris idea as well, since the choice isn't only a visual one.
