The Big Dog House Slot Game Review

The Big Dog House by Pragmatic Play brings its canine characters back for another trip to the reels, this time with Wilds that can arrive in several different sizes. A regular Wild may be joined by an expanded 1x3 version or a much larger 3x3 Colossal Wild, and each carries either a 2x or 3x multiplier.

There’s more going on once the Bonus Spins begin. Sticky multiplier Wilds remain on the grid, Ghost Wilds can remove them again, and the Biggie and Ghost Out modifiers change which Wild mechanics we encounter. Among online slots with several versions of the same special symbol, this one makes the Wilds central to both the regular game and the Bonus Spins.

Theme & Graphics

The Big Dog House is set in a back garden with the reels placed inside a large wooden dog house. Grass, fencing, neighbouring houses and a blue sky surround the grid, giving the game a playful suburban setting.

Dogs fill the top end of the paytable, with a Rottweiler, Shih Tzu, Pug and smaller brown dog appearing on the reels. We also see a green collar, a bone and the usual A, K, Q, J and 10 symbols. A dog house represents the Wild, while the three types of Bonus symbols are easy to tell apart by their red, green and blue paw-print designs. Those colours become particularly useful because they tell us whether we're looking at the standard Bonus symbol or one carrying a modifier.

On reels 2, 3 and 4, the Wild can appear in 1x1, 1x3 Expanded or 3x3 Colossal form. It substitutes for all regular symbols, with Bonus symbols being the exception. Every Wild also brings a 2x or 3x multiplier into the win. When two or more Wilds form part of the same winning payline, those multiplier values are combined by adding them together.

Bonus Features

Bonus Spins

Three red Bonus symbols landing on reels 1, 3 and 5 take us into the Bonus Spins. A 3x3 set of mini reels then decides how many spins we start with, as each of its nine positions awards one, two or three. That leaves us with anywhere from 9 to 27 Bonus Spins. Wilds appear as 1x1 symbols on reels 2, 3 and 4 during the round, becoming sticky once they land. Each one also reveals a 2x or 3x multiplier that stays unchanged for the rest of the feature.

Ghost Wild

The Ghost Wild appears only during Bonus Spins and only on reel 5. It substitutes for regular symbols and carries a random 2x or 3x multiplier.

Its arrival also has another effect. A random sticky Wild of any size currently on the screen is selected and removed at the start of the following spin. That means a Wild we've accumulated earlier in the round isn't necessarily staying there until the end if a Ghost Wild appears.

Biggie and Ghost Out Modifiers

Green Biggie Bonus symbols can appear on reels 1, 3 and 5. If a Biggie Bonus symbol forms part of the triggering combination with other Bonus symbols, the Bonus Spins start with the Biggie modifier. All Wilds appearing on reels 2, 3 and 4 are then either 1x3 or 3x3 symbols.

Blue Ghost Out Bonus symbols use the same three reels. Including one in the triggering combination activates Ghost Out, which removes Ghost Wilds from reel 5 for that round.

Both modifiers can activate together. In that case, Wilds on reels 2, 3 and 4 use the larger 1x3 or 3x3 sizes, while Ghost Wilds don't appear on reel 5. Bonus symbols don't appear during the round, so the feature cannot be retriggered.

Spin Mechanics

There are five reels, three rows and 20 fixed paylines in The Big Dog House. A winning combination starts on reel 1 and continues from left to right across adjacent reels. The game pays only the highest win on an individual line, then combines prizes when more than one payline wins on the same spin.

The different Wild sizes can take up anything from one position to a large section of the grid. Expanded Wilds measure 1x3, while Colossal Wilds cover a 3x3 area across the middle reels. Multiple Wilds on the same winning payline have their multiplier values added together. The top win is limited to 2,500x the bet, and hitting that amount during Bonus Spins brings the feature to an immediate end.

Smooth Spins' Opinion

The Big Dog House puts much of its attention on Wild symbols, but there are enough variations to make their behaviour less predictable. Seeing one arrive isn't the whole story because its size, multiplier and position can all affect the result.

The Bonus Spins make those Wild multipliers sticky, although a Ghost Wild can remove one of them later. Biggie changes the situation again by restricting the middle-reel Wilds to the two larger sizes. Triggering Biggie and Ghost Out together gives us a version of the round where larger Wilds are active without Ghost Wilds removing them.

We'd say this suits players who want a familiar payline setup but still want several mechanics influencing the Wilds. The 20-line structure itself remains straightforward, leaving the different Wild sizes and bonus modifiers to provide most of the variation.
